Few places blend the spirit of golf with royal legacy quite like Morocco. The game’s roots in the Kingdom trace back to 1914, with the creation of the Royal Country Club of Tangier, the first golf course ever built in Morocco. Today, nearly fifty courses stretch across the country, attracting some of the best players in the world.Morocco: Kingdom of Golf was created to celebrate more than a century of golf, as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the Hassan II Golf Trophy. Established in 1971 by His Late Majesty King Hassan II, the tournament reflects his visionary commitment to developing golf throughout the nation. He collaborated with some of the world’s leading golf course designers, including Robert Trent Jones Sr. (who designed the magnificent Royal Golf Dar Es Salam) and Jack Nicklaus (the creator of Michlifen Golf & Country Club). In 1993, His Late Majesty also launched the Lalla Meryem Cup, a prestigious competition for top female professionals. Today, His Majesty King Mohammed VI has entrusted his brother, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, to carry forward their father’s legacy, continuing to expand the sport, nurture new talent, and invest in Morocco’s golfing future. In May 2026, the Hassan II Golf Trophy will mark its milestone anniversary, celebrating not only a tournament but also the enduring passion and excellence of the game. Over the years, Steinbreder has made fifteen trips to Morocco and traveled throughout the Kingdom, making him the ideal person to recount this story, which also features original photography from Dutch photographer Ann Dokter.
