Just before the fall of Judah and Jerusalem (late 7th-early 6th century BCE), the prophet Jeremiah appears. It is not only Israel that comes into the prophetic focus, but the surrounding nations as well. In the book of Jeremiah, there is a separate collection of prophecies dedicated to the nations. In fiery language, these texts pronounce God's judgment on one nation after another, like a storm that sweeps across the world. The rising world power of Babylon is God's instrument, but it too will face his judgment. The prophecies expose all pride and falsehood, and vehemently denounce injustice and idolatry. Through a comprehensive linguistic, literary, and historical analysis the texts are carefully examined in detail, including a theological evaluation.
