The rulers of Thrace had a long tradition in the production and use of coins, dating back to the dawn of coinage. This book collects, analyses and interprets source and epigraphic data about Thrace, with an emphasis on the Thracian sovereign coinage from the beginning of the 2nd century BC to the middle of the 1st century when the Thracian kingdom ceased to exist and became part of the Roman empire. During the considered period, seventeen rulers ruled in Thrace. They are presented in the study chronologically – from Cotys, the son of Seuthes IV to Rhoemetalces III. Historical information is provided for each ruler, supported by epigraphic data, and by the analysis and typology of coin issues. The collective coin finds as well as individual coin finds have been studied, as have the countermarks, the weights and iconographic features of the various types.
