The purpose of the present essay is two-fold. First, togive a brief overview of the totality of the mathematicalwork of the Youngs from a modern viewpoint; it is hopedthat this would be an useful complement to the obituaryarticles of Hardy and Cartwright which are included in thisvolume.Second, to explain the rationale behind the choice ofthe 52 articles selected for inclusion in the presentvolume, out of a total of 215 which appear in theMathematical Bibliography of the Youngs. This mathematicalwork is divided into three broad categories: theory of realfunctions, Fourier analysis and miscellaneous.Public : libraries, mathematicians and specialists inthe history of mathematics.Au sommairePrefaceWilliam Henry Young, by G.
