Esmaël Bahrani développe une peinture forte et singulière, nourrie par son histoire personnelle et par la mémoire de son pays natal. Sur des fonds de sable et de pigment, sous des aplats de noir profond, des corps surgissent, arrachés à l’oubli par le grattage, l’érosion.Né en Iran en 1978, marqué par les stigmates de la guerre Iran-Irak et l’ombre des Gardiens de la révolution, il se forme aux beaux-arts. Dans la clandestinité, il commence à peindre, dans son atelier et les rues de Téhéran, d’imposantes silhouettes en insurrection.Arrivé en France en 2015, l’artiste fait de chaque œuvre un acte de mémoire comme une exploration de l'intime. Il porte la mémoire d’Ispahan, – ses teintes de craie, de brique crue et de sable blond – et convoque des figures universelles : l’exilé, Mahsa Amini, ou Eurydice, revenue des enfers pour mieux disparaître sous nos yeux.Ce catalogue monographique retrace la trajectoire d’une œuvre sans concession, essentielle et urgente. Against backgrounds of sand and pigment, beneath swathes of deep black, figures emerge, rescued from oblivion by scraping and erosion.Born in Iran in 1978, marked by the scars of the Iran-Iraq War and the shadow of the Revolutionary Guards, he trained in fine art and, in secret, began painting in his studio and on the streets of Tehran, creating imposing silhouettes in revolt.Having arrived in France in 2015, the artist makes each work an act of remembrance as well as an exploration of the intimate.
